In 1945, Robert Sherman invented the portable, in-window air conditioner (Patent # 2,433,960 granted January 6, 1948). It was subsequently stolen by a large manufacturer whose initials rhyme with "CT." CT subsequently made hundreds of millions of dollars on it. Sherman did not have the resources to fight the big corporation in court -- they promised to "break him" if he tried - and thus never received a dime. He died in 1962. Recognition of his contribution to heating/air conditioning is long overdue.
